This was such a unique floor, and we thoroughly enjoyed bringing it back to life! A multi-species border ran all along the outer edges of each room. This flooring was top-nailed, top-nailing hardwood floors, commonly used for 5/16-inch thick flooring, saw its peak from the early 1900s through the 1950s, but largely stopped in popularity between the 1950’s and 1970’s as tongue-and-groove flooring became the standard. It was phased out in favor of faster, hidden-nail installation methods and the rise of thicker, pre-drilled, or tongue-and-groove hardwoods.
